Suliman had a very easy rise to the sultan because his father, selim am selim the grim, as the turks call him, had no compunction in killing. And so every one else who could have become sultan a was despatched out of the way. His accession was greeted with enormous relief by the european powers and christendom as a whole. The threat of violence hangs over them, doesn't it? I think it does.
