Everything about the space program was kept secret, partly because it was allied to the missile programme. The rockets that these animals, satellites and later humans were being sent on were basically intercontinental ballistic missiles with a nuclear bomb inside. Andlika isn't the only animal that's been sent into space, but she is by far the most famous to day.
