Mao had two main things in his favor, home field advantage and numerical superiority. Mao sent a message to the US via the Indian ambassador saying if you cross the 38th parallel, you're going to have to deal with China. The overriding paramount issue was that no one in the China leadership wanted any American troops on the Gilean Liaoning border. Joe and others in the top echelons of government and the party were not so sure this war was a good idea. But like always, once Mao's mind was made up, Joe fell immediately into line and went to work.
