John Erickson came to New York in 1851 and created his biggest invention, the caloric or a hot air engine. He also made the first submarine boat, the first self propelled torpedo and the first torpedo boat. In 1861 he had come up with a model of a new type of warship that could be built in 90 days. It eventually won him the Rumford Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) Later in his life, this engine would make him wealthy.
