It's difficult to know how many people died in the Crimean War. The Russians have seen figures as high as a million for Russian loss of life. French governments ever since 1871 have been remarkably anxious not to be connected with the second empire. No French president wants to look like Louis Napoleon III. They tend to back away from this until recently even the second empire style was a little bit out of fashion.
