Film Review - Ethan Hawkins
The film is based on a novel, which was based on the true story of that author's experience with a chain gang prison thing. The only explanation or justification he gives is at some point when one of the other characters, i think his name was dragline, is that he just says, like, a small town evening, not much to do. He seems to be so driven by his own internal compass. And you can understand then that from the perspective of everyone else, it looks really strange,. Like he seems so unresponsive to what's going on around him. E doesn't react to things as people normally do.
