The Importance of the Russian Nuclear Deterrent
Putin would need to be convinced that it would end the war immediately in his favor. The Russian nuclear deterrent at this point is existential, not only for Putin, but for Russia. In order for him to run the risk of devaluing the thing that Russia relies on he would have to be pretty confident that using them would lead to success. But I think what we've generally seen is that actually Putin's understanding of the situation has moved more in touch with reality rather than less in touch withreality.
