What's So Interesting About Glaciers?

There are a lot of things in them, both chemically speaking, and i suppose in terms of little animals and beasties. What's really interesting about glaciers is that 20 years ago we thought they were these sterile waste lands where no life could th ive. And what we've discovered is that they actually have a huge population of active, single celled micro organisms surviving in the cold.
