House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says direct talks will be held between him and President Obama. But major differences remain in the policy to avoid default jig, CNN's Jake Tapper reports. Republicans are pushing for work requirements on social safety net programs like Medicaid; Democrats call that a red line. The president is still going to be away for several days. He leaves tomorrow for Japan. I don't believe he'll return until Sunday or Monday.
