The Origins of Critical Theory
A critical theory is Marxian economic theory juxtaposed oppositionally to what they call traditional economic theory which is like law say fair classical liberalism Manchester school classical economic thought free market theory. The Frankfurt School can shift gears and take that framework into other non-economic dimensions so let's assume Marxian economics is correct because they take that as an ideological axiom. They move in a sociological direction over the economic terms but they're not questioned on economic terms, they just applied in anthropological or literary or law or education in pedagogyso this becomes the thrust of the Frankfurt School now.
