The soldiers were fundamentally healthy. They had a good diet and, fully enough, that people joke that the outdoor life didn't seem to do them any harm. When they have a real freeze, well, obviously there is a risk of exposure, but very few people die of it. Where they died is in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia, where people died of a horrid cocktail of diseases based on dysentery,. typhus and I think called soldiers heart. And you don't die, but some people do, but not a lot.
