I read the book last night and then I got to the author's note at the end where you say they're improbable joy, they being Thomas and George does not excuse virulent racism. And it struck me that anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or wants Americans to be ignorant. But also that removing them from the note would actually it would be a disservice to the book.
