The Missile Crisis in Cuba Is Not the Centre of Their Story at All
The Missile Crisis is a very big event in Cuban history, obviously. But it's not the focus of the story for many Cubans. And I think that probably is partially to do with the fact that for Fidel Castro, this was not a triumph. This was for him a disgrace and a huge letdown. It did reinforce the idea that actually nuclear war really could happen quite easily through miscommunication, miscalculation and so on.
