The Importance of Traditional Herding

Lebanese herders have been called in by forest management experts to help protect the region's ancient forests from wildfires. The 2021 wildfires, which spread across the eastern Mediterranean, were devastating for Akkar - one of Lebanon's poorest regions. Herders keep trails into the deep woods, and their grazing animals prevent the trees, grass, and plants from overgrowing. But they should also be mindful not to take their animals to graze in protected areas. Well-managed rangelands lead to healthier and more productive livestock, improved wildlife habitat, improved watershed conditions,. And a profitable operation for the herders.
