The History of the SS in Auschwitz
The only existing gas chamber in Auschwitz at this time was not large enough to cope with the large number of Jews who were to be killed. A new temporary gas chamber, so-called bunker number one or a little red house, was opened in Birkenau on the edge of the forest. So that was the moment when Auschwitz became a camp which combined two functions, the function of the ordinary regular German concentration camp and the death camp as much as other camps of the Axion Ränhärt in Istanbul.
