Du Bois had very contentious relationships with a number of other black scholars. He believed that there were a few people, if anyone, who was smarter, more qualified than him when it came to writing the history of the black experience in the war. His attempts to work with Carter G. Woodson and Emmett Scott ultimately failed because of egos,. But also because Emmett J. Scott in particular had intentions to write his own book on theHistory of the War. And this became a very heated rivalry that would carry on throughout the inner war period.
