The Importance of the Colonial Context in Exploring Egypt
In the second half of the 18th century, there was a fascination with Egypt's ancient past. It had become a byword for bizarrely mystical, modern, imaginative thinking. France saw itself as the inheritor of this kind of magical new revolutionary thinking and so wanted to be associated with it. So you end up with a Napoleonic military invasion of Egypt that has in amongst the troops, a dedicated team of academics who were studying ancient Egypt at the time.
