The internet began in the 1980s as a way to survive a nuclear attack and be able to launch retaliatory codes through DARPA. So if you were an internet investor in the late 80s or early 90s, most of those companies didn't do well. It took from 2006 to 2012 before that excess build had really just worked its way out of the system.
