The East India Company and the 1943 Famine
Bengal has suffered a series of famines. The 1943 famine was the exception that proves the rule, says Dr Ravi Agrawal. It can be blamed on lack of efficient civil society in period when East India Company had just taken over from previous Mogul rulers. There was very little effective governance in the local areas and there was speculation by food traders who did not get on with elected provincial government.
