The Crimean War: A Late Victorian Construct
The Crimea is right at the heart of 2023 as well as the 1850s. We need to understand that the Crimean War that dominates memory is a late Victorian construct. If you look at it in terms of strategic effect and the ability of the Western Allies to block, prevent or even push back Russian aggression, it's everywhere. What the British are doing in the high north, in the white sea, what they're doing in the Baltic is hugely important. The real pressure on Russia is its backward economy and the vulnerability of its establishment,. particularly in the Baltic, to pressure from the sea.
