What Is the Best Way to Understand God?
In the classical world, natural philosophy is not a disinterested activity. So you study nature in order to understand nature and human role within it. You can't separate science from religion or whatever religion is in the ancient world. They feed into one another. The book begins with a rather sorry story of a fourth-this-century female mathematician in North Africa who is butchered. But the point I'm making here is that platonic mathematics she was studying was a quasi-religious activity because that was the best way of understanding the eternal and the perfect which brought you close to God.
