The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. There are 5 levels of evidence in clinical research: level 1 includes randomized clinical trials, level 2 includes prospective cohort studies, level 3 includes case series, and level 5 includes expert opinion, case reports, and personal observation.
