The Disillusionment of the Human Rights Movement

The modern human rights movement seems to have been birthed in the ashes of disillusionment. The Prague Spring, I think, when the Soviet sent tanks in to crush a kind of attempt to have a better socialism, convinces people that it's not going to happen. A lot of Latin American activists say, well, we can't win in this hemisphere, especially once America starts backing authoritarian right-wing regimes unless we appeal to some seemingly neutral moral principles.
