The Johnson Amendment and the IRS
Lori Borger: Johnson Amendment has been around for 60 years. She says it was passed by then Senator Lyndon Johnson to protect nonprofit organizations that endorse or oppose candidates. Only one church ever lost its tax exempt status, she says; they were an anti-abortion group. Borger: The president's executive order didn't revoke the amendment but gave nonprofits license to get involved in political campaigns.
