It was Bill Sharp's 1963 article on a simplified model of portfolio selection, the one factor model that started bringing attention to the field. In the 60s, academic folks were getting more and more interested by the 70s. You had Barbara Rosenberg out making a bigger and bigger living teaching portfolio theory.
