How Did You Come Into the World of Surgery?

I was fascinated to read that your first interest into medical research was when you learned about your own quite traumatic birth for your mother. It certainly mapped a specialty interest in my future career because she got a deep vein thrombosis and a massive pulmonary embolism, which very nearly killed her. And I was completely perplexed by this and fascinated by why it should happen. When you were a child living in Blackpool, there was no NHS, of course. So becoming ill or being in an accident must have been quite a worry then. What was life like for you before the NHS?
