The Three Modes of Thinking
The danger is when you stop being able to discern value in the past and everything becomes valuable because it's from the past. That's where the critical mode comes in and it's able to discern what is good and what is bad in history. I was thinking about those controversial monuments that people want to tear down. They're saying this person exemplifies or represents or symbolizes the injustice of the past. The monumentalists would say, well, no, this person represents an ideal which transcends the flaws of the person that embodies the ideal. And Nietzsche agrees as long as that serves life, that's important.
