It's clear, even just from looking at lady diana cooper's diaries, that wallace was bored by him. She begins to resent it more and more as the marriage goes on. Partly she likes us, but partly she she loses any sort of respect for him. And that continues all the way through, really, to his death. Ah, it's a really poignant story. Here was a man absolutely obsessed with her, who'd given up everything for her, and she just treated him like dirt.
