He was a sort of shocked spectator at his own mental collapse. He had these long er episodes of perfect sanity during them, sohe could see what was going on almost as an outsider. The chapters that deal with this in my book are, i think, rather moving. I mean, the pathos, pathos of it is credibly powerful.
