Dr. Dirk's Theories on Plague
Doctor dirk posits the idea of murine or marine typhus, explaining that it isa like the plague and that it's transmitted by rat fleas. He details a son ro where rats come in on a trade vessel but are also stricken with early, isolated versions of plague. So these rats are doomed. The rats get off the vessels, work their way into town, and they all die. They are carrying murine typhus in their fleas, but are also afflicted with early, isolated version of plague. This is one of the bigger contenders for a plausible scenario if the story was connected to an actual medical condition.
