The brutal practices that were used by concessionary companies like rounding up people and threatening to kill them became the kind of part and parcel of what the colony relied on to get laborers. Now the colony denied it, the colonial regime denied it when there were suggestions say in the press in France or if travelers came across it and wrote about it in books. But in fact, those very practices that had defined the concessionary system and the brutality of it becoming the kind of the cornerstone of labor recruitment in many parts of the colony.
