Montfort inspired huge devotion amongst people below him and huge popularity in the wider political community. But at the same time antagonized equals and people who thought they were his superiors. And I think they found his self righteousness, his self confidence absolutely intolerable. The beginning of the end of the regime is when Montfort quarrels with someone who very much thought he was his equal - Gilbert de Clair.
