Is the Gothic a Conservative Thing, or a Radical Thing?
The gothic is bo very, very kind of radical and subversive, but also very conservative in a way. Some one like e stephen king, is quite explicit about saying, actually, my horror is consolatory,. because there's a kind of resolution to the threat or the menace that he invokes In so many of his books. So yet, it can be really a radical t can be really conservative. It allows you to articulate anxieties at the edge colonialism and empire. Sir rudyerd kipling wrote lots of stories about haunting in india which is clearly a type of navigating this limit of empire.
