An idiom is a fixed expression that people often say as part of their normal conversation. You can't understand it just by looking at the individual words. So if i give you an idiom, ar er, and you just look up the words in the dictionary, you might not be able to understand what it means. The words together have another meaning. Native speakers use idioms all the time when they're when they're talking, when they're writing to each other and so on.
