The Ox Gores Another Ox

The first four laws deal with theft. If man steals an ox or a sheep, slaughters it and sells it, he pays five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. There is an awful lot of question about this. Why isn't it just double restitution? And there's a good deal of speculation, i think. Again, the answer is to be found by looking at the symbolic meaning of these laws in what they meant in the sacrificial system. Sheep represents poor people, and the oxen represent the powerful.
