The GDR is an artificial thing. It only exists because of the Second World War, basically where troop movements ended more or less in Germany and which parts of Germany got occupied by who. So that's the Soviet Union, Britain, the US and France to split Germany up - not as to separate countries, but just to occupy it. And so you end up with kind of this quite random decision where which part of Germany would beoccupied by who. But I start the story actually quite a lot earlier because I think it's really important once again to understand the human side," he says.
