Most of yellowstone basin is and within wyoming territory, although there are parts of it that are in idaho and montana. The land was contested when they did thatd so presumably, what's the state of the great westward migration at this time? As you mention, is th territory. What was its legal status? And was it contested by its indigenous people? Sure, yes.
