The author says the novel is a fiction, but there must be some element of social engagement for it to work. Both soilus and tramalchio are ex slaves, so society is judging them as having been slaves in the first place anyway. But fundamentally, we do see from those stories, you do open yourself up to real criticism if you get it wrong.
