The Negative Implications of Modernity for Nietzsche
In modernity, according to Nietzsche, we develop the science of history and that involves specific negative implications. One of the main critics he levels at the scholars of his time is that they are not worthy of the judgments they make on the past. He wants people to construct through a pure passionate engagement with life to cast a horizon around themselves so that the past doesn't control them anymore. It's like falling in love: everything you thought you knew doesn't apply anymore. All your valuations are null. Everything becomes new again.
