The Different Types of Amputations
Trans-tibial amputations average an increase of 25% of metabolic demands with a short BKA averaging of 40%. A long BKA increases the metabolic demands only about 10%. The thrueny amputation is the most proximal amputation level available in children to maintain walking speeds without increased energy expenditure compared to normal children. Upper extremity amputations are indicated for irreparable loss of blood supply, severe soft tissue compromise, malignant tumors, smoldering infections, and congenital anomalies.
