The Relationship Between Long History and Historical Events
Would the industrialisation have happened anyway even if Margaret Thatcher had failed to win re-election in 1983? I always find counterfactual questions really difficult because there's so many different factors. But I think Thatcher's election in 1983 does kickstart the particular direction and speed of that deindustrialisation where by selling off the family silver becomes a way of creating an individualised competitive version of society.
