Bacteria and archaea both rose four million years ago, but have very different membranes. We think the bacteria in archaa are using proton gradients across membranes to drive their growth. But it's not obvious that they can do this without a leaky membrane. And so there'there's a paradox about what kind of a membrane did their common ancestor have?
