The Industrial Revolution and the Empire
Britain missed the second and third industrial revolutions. We didn't quite get the cars or aviation. And so i suppose we've been slightly hobbled by that initial success. It was, as you point out, the greatest economic miracle of all time. So it takes a while to accept that either those positions are unreplicable or that we need to evolve. An edwardian britain with its empire is probably not a radically different place economically.
