Daulu's Journey in the Gulag
Daulu is able to count as well as he can speak Russian. His ability to be both literate and numerate meant that he could get a desk job. And this is ultimately what means he doesn't starve and sort of die of weakness in the way that many of his other fellow prisoners do die. The Gulag pretty surely does kill him actually, even if it didn't kill him immediately.
