William wallace emerges as king of scotland in the late 1290s. We don't know much about it, but he's not a commoner and his options professionally are essentially going to the church or the military. There is some suggestion that his education might have included, as wouldn't be usual of someone of his status, some military background. He never subjects himself to the fealty of edward; baliel does ultimately rebel against this - which enrages edward.
