What Is the Tradition of Funerals for Math Textbooks?

The idea is that thinking about math classes from a student's point of view is less about educational debates and more about school traditions. So one of the really surprising things to me was that students that many 19th century American colleges held funerals for their math textbooks. They burned their books, they buried them, they sang songs, did speeches over them. And it was really a way of showing college pride.
