Before 1980 no U.S. soldiers had died in the Middle East whereas after 1980 the vast majority of U.s. soldier deaths have taken place in the region. Increasing military intervention has a lot to do with the end of the Cold War and of a broader quest to first of all you know forget the defeat first military defeat of the U.S army in Vietnam, says Peter Bergen.
