The 19th century was a time when new understandings or ideas about anatomy had come to maturity. In marriage, in England, for much of the century, not only did women have to give their husbands their property, but also their bodies. We know that many women had good sexual relationships with their husbands and partners. It wasn't a case that sex was just a thing that was done to them.
