How to Index Success in the Short Term

When people start exercise, they get hungrierd and often add weight. And so sometimes weight actually creeps up when people have set goals to lose it. So rather than deciding every day, i need to see progress with that number going lower scale,. I think that's an excellent strategy of thinking, what are other ways that i can index success in the short term? That will continue to motivate me as i pursue something that's going to take a longer, a longer haul life.
