The Importance of Astronomy in the American Dream

The Turkish culture I grew up in was very conformist in many ways, particularly in the educational system. For me, astronomy almost became a means of escaping that conformist culture. There was really no future for me in Turkey with astronomy. So I wanted to get out of this conformist culture and pursue astronomy at the sort of the frontier of rocket science, which was in the United States.
